The Position

Global Computational Biology and Digital Sciences (gCBDS) is a global organization across multiple sites at Boehringer Ingelheim including Vienna (Austria), Biberach (Germany), and Ridgefield (USA). With immediate effect, we are hiring an experienced Principal Scientist Computational Biology in Vienna (Austria) for our computational Cancer Research team.

Biomedical research is turning into information science, with an ever-increasing availability of multi-omics data sets ranging from pre-clinical models to patient data. Combining these assets with state-of-the art methods such as machine learning, mathematical modelling, or network analysis, will allow for a holistic understanding of cancer systems biology, with the ultimate goal to find new therapeutics concepts, biomarkers, and drug resistance mechanisms.

The successful candidate has a strong computational, data science, and cancer biology background with a track record of designing, executing, and delivering impactful collaborative projects in an academic or industry setting. The Principal Scientist is expected to work in multidisciplinary teams, applying strong quantitative reasoning and statistical analysis skills to drug discovery projects, generating testable hypotheses, and driving decision making analysis. Strong presentation skills coupled with an expertise in cancer biology, as well as the ability to identify questions that computational approaches can address, are key competencies found in the candidate.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and interpret experiments by using multi-modal pre-clinical & patient data sets coupled with state-of-the-art computational methods in collaboration with various teams
  • Generate experimentally testable hypotheses with existing data sets, leading to actionable insights into complex cancer phenotypes (e.g. drug resistance, rational drug combinations, prediction of adverse effects)
  • Establish and drive scientific collaborations within the company, and external partners from academia or industry
  • Develop deep expertise in at least one analytical or biomedical area that serves the collaborative teams and extends the toolbox for the computational teams
  • Publishing and presenting novel scientific results at international conferences and workshops is encouraged

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or similar degree with post-doctoral experience and/or preferable more than 3 years industry experience – background in biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related life-science field
  • Strong quantitative and analytical mindset, ability to interface disciplines and identify computational addressable questions
  • Work experience in cancer biology, including hands-on-experience with key data sets and databases in the field
  • Proficiency in either R or python as a programming language, version control & collaborative code development, optional experience with remote compute environments such as Linux-based HPC or cloud computing
  • Proven track record of driving complex computational analyses delivering actionable insights, including publications
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

Your Benefits

  • Flexible working time models/home office depending on the position
  • Extra vacation days (bridge-days)
  • Staff restaurant with a variety of lunch options for your daily well-being
  • Training opportunities for your personal and professional growth
We offer an attractive salary package in line with your qualification, experience, and individual competencies. The base salary is composed of a market oriented excess payment and the respective amount according to the Austrian collective agreement (at least € 60,000 gross per year/full-time).
