Your CV – your ticket to your career

Your application documents are the very first information a hiring manager receives about you. And especially at the beginning of your career they are often the only information available to recruiters to make a decision.

A CV is not a biography. It’s a sales pitch.

Most CVs don’t fail because of missing qualifications — but because of how they’re presented.

Imagine – you spent five years in a lab. You mastered techniques most people can’t pronounce. You solved problems that actually matter. And now you should put it all on one page..

Here’s what you should consider when writing your CV.

The recruiter’s reality

Before you write a single line, understand who’s reading it. A recruiter may have 100 applications for one position. That’s why your CV gets only few seconds on a first scan. If the structure is unclear, the relevant information is buried, or the language doesn’t match the job description — it’s gone.

More and more often there’s also a second reader you may not have considered: AI screening software.
Before a human ever sees your application, an algorithm may have already filtered it out. This means keywords matter — not keyword stuffing, but deliberately using the language of the job description. Your challenge is to make it as easy as possible for both to see that you’re the right fit.

Structure: most relevant at a glance

There are no universal rules for the structure — but there is a logic. Start with your
contact information and a short

professional summary (3–4 lines: who you are, what you bring, what you’re looking for). Then follow with the

section most relevant to your profile: Graduates and early-career scientists: Education first, then internships and research experience.
Experienced professionals: Professional experience first, then education.

One rule that always applies: reverse chronological order. Most recent first.

skills, publications or conference contributions (selective, not exhaustive), and any additional relevant training.

Experience: achievements, not tasks

This is where most CVs lose the recruiter. “Responsible for cell culture and PCR” tells a recruiter nothing they couldn’t assume. What did you actually do with that? “Established a new cell culture protocol that increased reproducibility from 60% to 92%, subsequently adopted lab-wide” — that’s a result. That’s memorable.

For every position, ask yourself: What changed because I was there? What did I improve, build, solve, or lead? Numbers help. Even approximate ones.

If you’re just starting out: Your thesis, lab rotations, and academic projects count. You likely have more to show than you think — it just needs to be framed convincing.

Skills: don’t list them — prove them

Every CV has a skills section. Almost none of them are convincing. “Analytical thinking. Teamwork. Communication skills.” — every candidate writes this. No recruiter believes it. Instead, let your experience section do the work. If you led a project, – that’s leadership. If you presented at a conference, – that’s communication. If you trained colleagues, – that’s mentoring. Name the skill — but back it up with evidence elsewhere in the CV.

Education: keep it focused

List your two highest academic degrees. Add your thesis title only if it’s directly relevant to the position you’re applying for. Older qualifications only if they add something specific. Do not list every course or lecture. If a very specific methodological knowledge is required, mention it — briefly, in the skills section.

Gaps and breaks

Less of an issue than most candidates fear. Career breaks are common and widely accepted — as long as you can explain them credibly. A parental leave, a personal project, a health matter: what matters is that you can speak to it without hesitation.

One CV never fits all

Every application deserves a tailored CV. Not a complete rewrite — but a deliberate adjustment of emphasis, language, and framing to match the specific role and company. Read the job description carefully. Mirror their language. Move the most relevant experience to where it’s seen first.

AI tools can help you adapt quickly — but only use them as a starting point, for inspiration or feedback, but never as a full replacement for your own judgment. You know your story. Make sure your CV tells it.

Think about – your knowledge as a Master is not different from that of your fellow students — you took the same exams, had the same professors, worked with the same lab equipment, use the same AI etc. The only difference lies in your personality.
